Regional EPA Administrator Jim Gulliford expects E15 to be available for the 2021 summer driving season in Kansas City

Renew Kansas Biofuels Association has been working toward amending Kansas and Missouri regulations and State Implementation Plans (SIPs) to allow for year-round sales of E15 fuel in Kansas City.

EPA Region 7 Administrator Jim Gulliford reported this morning on WIBW’s Ag Issues program he fully expects E15 to be available for the 2021 summer driving season in Kansas City. A link to the entire interview is available via the button below. The Kansas City E15 segment occurs at the 9:20 – 10:30 mark.

Update: The final revocation of KDHE regulation (K.A.R. 28-19-719) occurs on Friday, December 11. The second step requires KDHE to submit a request to EPA to amend our SIP for the Kansas City area. Staff spoke with KDHE earlier this week, and KDHE indicated that its request to amend the SIP will be submitted to EPA this week. KDHE also indicated that EPA understands this is a high-priority issue and it will fast-track the approval.

Forecast: Once EPA receives the requests to amend the SIPs from Kansas and Missouri, it will publish the proposals in the federal register for a 30-day public comment period. EPA will review any public comments received, and should then issue their approval to amend the SIPs. Kansas and Missouri are currently on track to allow year-round sales of E15 fuel in the Kansas City area well before the summer 2021 driving season (June 1, 2020).
